Summary: A brutally honest and effective story about adolescent boredom and destructive friendships, told by a schoolboy whose name we are not told. He begins to hang out with Pete Cassidy, a lad in his village who goes to the same school. But we are told it is a friendship of convenience, he doesn't really like Cassidy. When Cassidy gets it into his head that they should set traps for the rats in his garden, things start to go very, very wrong.
